What Is A Pressure Side Pool Cleaner?

Pressure pool cleaners are swimming pool robots that utilize the pressure side port of a pool which helps create a pressure for the cleaner from water moving in and out of the cleaner. They are designed to help clean debris from the bottom of your pool to assist a swimming pool owner with pool maintenance. They are best for inground pools.

If you don't want to spend $75 to $200 monthly for a pool cleaning service, doing it yourself using pool cleaners would be your best bet, as they make pool maintenance much easier than doing it manually.

Is a Pressure Side Pool Cleaner For Me?

Not everybody should get a pressure side pool cleaner because these types of pool robots require a pressure side port. Many above ground pools do not have pressure side ports.

Additionally, utilizing a pool pump will help give a more powerful and effective clean.

If your pool does not have a pressure side port then you should not be using pressure pool vacuums. Instead you can look at some of the top robot swimming pool cleaners (recommended) and our list of the best suction pool cleaners as alternatives.

However, they are  GREAT choices if you do have a side port because at a low cost (few hundred bucks) you can get a good cleaner that will replace your pool man.

Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 Pressure Side Pool Cleaner  will make you say "wow". It's clean is by far the best out of the other pool vacuums we reviewed here. In fact, on almost all types of pools it was able to a really great job almost EVERYWHERE other than the stairs.

It doesn't deliver a perfect clean (not that any one does), but it gets close enough so that you won't need to do any pool cleaning yourself other than brushing off the stairs.

polaris vac sweep 280 pressure side pool cleaner

The only real cons was that it requires a little part maintenance (maybe every year or two) and that it has a relatively small bag. You would think that they could easily put a larger bag, but I guess it didn't make the cut in the design.

Regardless, you can still see the significant difference the Polaris Vac-Sweep will make in your pool and the time you will save.

Bottom Line: Head and shoulders above the rest, the Polaris  Vac-Sweep will be able to successfully clean anyone's pool.

As a cleaner with one of the most reviews and a great reputation, it is sure to make you a happy pool owner.

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Great for pools of all shapes and sizes
  • Cleans walls up to the pool water line
  • Hassle free - don't have to reset it and doesn't get tangled

Things We Didn't Like

  • Mediocre debris bag

Price: $$

Pentair Kreepy Krauly Legend Pressure-Side Inground Pool Cleaner is easily a top pool cleaner, but is a tad bit expensive.

It provides the one of the best cleans compared to the other ones we reviewed, even if it [rarely] missed a spot.

However, I never felt the need to clean the pool  because of the great cleaning job. Just don't count on it to clean the steps as you'll still have to clean them yourself.

Pentair Kreepy Krauly Legend Pressure Pool Cleaner

Another reason why this is a top pressure pool machine is because it handles large debris with ease. It also NEVER falls because of its 4 wheels so you don't have to pick it back up in the pool, which means it is low maintenance.

This means that it is one of the few pool cleaners that actually make your life easier.

Bottom Line: One of the top automatic pool cleaners, the Pentair Kreepy Krauly will give you an AMAZING clean that will keep your pool sparkling, but at a higher cost. Definitely worth the money if you're willing to pay a little extra for a high quality product.

Things We Liked

  • Provides the best clean and is best in class
  • Large debris intake
  • Doesn't require manual assitance

Things We Didn't Like

  • More expensive than others
  • Doesn't clean steps

Price: $$

The Polaris vac sweep 3900 is one of the best  pressure pool cleaners from Polaris. It's good enough such that most people should consider getting it if they have a pressure side port.

An important thing to note is that it seems like it has been falsely bombarded with poor Amazon reviews. Many people have liked it, and our experience with it is pretty good as well.

First of all, Polaris meets expectations for a brand of its size. It's another quality cleaner and a great upgrade for those with older models. Most people found that it lasts 3-4 years which is a good amount of time for a cleaner.

Finally, it requires less maintenance than other cleaners. Because it has 2 debris bags, it requires less emptying so it can clean longer without your aid.

However, it's not perfect. Like most cleaners, it isn't great at cleaning steps - in fact in our experience it doesn't really reach them at all. If you've had pool cleaners before you should know this is no surprise.

Another minor con is that it isn't the best at turning since it's a bit bulky. The turning isn't terrible, but sometimes it can get stuck and has trouble turning into tight spaces. A small improvement here would easily make it the top pressure pool cleaner.

Bottom Line: The Polaris Vac Sweep 3900 is a great option - especially if you like the Polaris product line. It's dependable, powerful, and doesn't have any major cons.

Things We Liked

  • Reputable brand with great cleaner
  • Long life 3+ years
  • Double bags requires less changing
  • Powerful, consistent clean

Things We Didn't Like

  • Could clean steps better
  • Turning could be improved

Price: $$$

The XtremepowerUS Pressure Side Pool Cleaner is one of the newest  to hit the market (as of July 2016).

There seems to be a pretty positive consensus among people that it pretty good, and I would definitely agree.

It covers most of the pool, but, in addition to missing some spots, isn't really able to clean stairs. It also seems to be better for small to small-medium sized debris.

XtremepowerUs Pressure Side Pool Cleaner

However, that's it on the negatives. In all honestly it provides a pretty thorough clean (at least on the pool floor) and it does so effectively. It won't keep the pool walls as clean, but it still helps to save a ton of time since it will clean the deep end of the pool.

Not only does it provide a good clean, but also a flexible clean. The XtremepowerUS is great for the different type of pool surfaces (concrete, fiberglass, vinyl) which is nice because it's not limited to just one type of pool.

Bottom Line: One of the best pressure pool cleaners we reviewed, the XtremepowerUS provides  a squeaky clean for all types of pools. With minor cons this is definitely worth a buy!

Things We Liked

  • Gets every inch of pool floor
  • Good for all types of pool surfaces
  • Awesome for small to medium debris

Things We Didn't Like

  • Doesn't clean stairs
  • Not great for large debris

Polaris Vac-Sweep Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaner for Above Ground Vinyl Pools is decent, but like other pool machines that specialize in a certain type of pool we give it a lower rating.

However, it does provide a decent clean that only takes a few hours. Unfortunately, it definitely isn't perfect because it will miss fine dust, dirt, and sand. It's also not as hands off as you may like - it frequently gets tangled in its hoses and needs part replacements every year or so.

polaris vac sweep 65

Despite all of this, the fact that it is so easy to set up and install made the initial deployment very pleasing. A unique feature it has is that it will be able to filter out larger debris like leaves and sticks so it doesn't get stuck and make it into the filter bag. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it really does work!

Bottom Line: The Polaris Vac-Sweep is mediocre, but it will help clean your pool. It's not the great value for the money but there are worse choices out there.

Look into one of the others that we rated higher.

Things We Liked

  • Easy set up and installation
  • Finishes cleaning in 3-4 hours
  • Good filtration system

Things We Didn't Like

  • Misses fine dust and dirt
  • Frequently gets tangled
  • Requires frequent parts replacement

Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer Pressure-Side Inground Pool Cleaner is one of the worst that has been reviewed on the site.

It's almost everything you don't. Because there are so many different parts they tend to break easily and need to be replaced quite frequently.

It also is almost useless in actually cleaning your pool because it gets stuck spinning in circles and can't even reverse even though Pentair claims this as one of the key features.

Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer Pressure Pool Cleaner

This isn't to say that this Kreepy Krauly is totally useless. It has some cool features such as being quite fast when it's actually working and some awesome LED lights that enables night cleaning. Unfortunately, these cool extra features are't worth much because it doesn't do its primary job of cleaning the pool.

You'll waste more time on this product than actually getting a clean pool.

Bottom Line: Pentair has some good products, but this one has no place among the best. It's not worth getting it unless you like wasting time to replace parts and restart it.

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Faster cleaning
  • Bright LED lights enables night time cleaning

Things We Didn't Like

  • Breaks easily and requires maintenance
  • Gets stuck spinning in circles
  • Doesn't reverse as claimed

There is no doubt that the Zodiac Polaris Turbo Turtle Pool Cleaner is one of the cutest pool cleaners out there, but is it the best? Definitely not.

It definitely has a couple of design flaws. For example, it's ONLY good for flat pools. If your pool GRADUALLY declines/inclines then it's fine but if there are a lot of underwater steps, obstacles, or dips then it'll have trouble cleaning your pool.

Zodiac polaris Turbo Turtle

Additionally, its coverage is pretty weak. Although it can get hard to reach areas it has a bad random system. Because it moves in random patterns, this is important - it means it won't cover your whole pool consistently.

Part of this may be because it gets tangled. If you bundle up the pool hose when you put it away, after a couple of months it'll cause permanent damage and will not allow your Turtle Automatic Pool Cleaner to extend all the way (since it gets too used to being crumpled up).

While its overall cleaning is pretty mediocre it does have some benefits. For example, it's effective in both inground and above ground pools so that means it's good for pretty much anyone.

Another good feature is that it'll remove debris before it hits your pool filter's system. This puts less pressure on your pool and increases the shelf life of your pumps and filters.

Bottom Line: The Zodiac Polaris Turbo Turtle is a mediocre pool cleaner. It is affordable and really cute, but doesn't deliver a great clean that you hope for.

There are tons of better options.

Things We Liked

  • Good for inground and above ground pools
  • Good for hard to reach areas
  • Removes debris before hitting pool filter system

Things We Didn't Like

  • Only good on flat pools (diagonal is okay)
  • Hose gets tangled
  • Weak coverage

The Zodiac 6-120 Vac Sweep 165 misses the mark. It does its job, but not without a lot of hicups. It's okay, but there are far better options listed here. As always, we'll start with the pros.

First of all, unlike most cleaners, it's really good for fiberglass pools. Not a lot of cleaners are, and this is where this Zodiac pool cleaner really shines.

Secondly, overall it is good at handling heavy duty debris. If you have a dirty pool or it continuously gets a lot of junk in it then this pool sweeper might be a good choice. However, there are other cleaners for a similar price that does this just as well with less cons.

Polaris Vac Sweep 6-120

Unfortunately, the 165 has some cons that just make it not really worth it overall. It has a medium-short product life of around 2 years. It's not terrible, but you can get an automatic cleaner for less that will last just as long.

If you do decide to get it you'll notice the instructions are REALLY bad. They don't help and were not well made so you'll have to rely on online videos and instructions for better guidance. Sure, it's not a deal breaker, but it just goes to show there was a lack of effort put into this product.

Finally, this pressure side pool cleaner doesn't clean walls. A lot of cleaners don't, but this is just another con to add to the list. If you take really good care of your pool with chlorine and algaecide then this might not be an issue.

Most of us aren't that diligent. However, if you want an effective way to clean your pool use a top pressure washer.

Bottom Line: The Zodiac Polaris Vac Sweep 165 isn't really worth getting unless you have a Fiberglass pool. If you don't have a fiberglass pool there are just so many better options you can go with.

Things We Liked

  • Good for fiberglass
  • Great at heavy workloads

Things We Didn't Like

  • Short life of ~2 years
  • poor instructions
  • No wall coverage
