7 Best Bodyboards / Boogie Boards Reviews of 2019 | Top Rated Must-Haves

Based on the ancient Hawaiian Paipo boards (Paipo meaning short or small board) and dating back 2000 years BC, bodyboards or boogie boards are used in bodybording. This water sport has hugely grown in popularity in the last few decades.

Bodyboarders ride waves on a small board in a prone position (lying on their stomach) and use fins on their feet to get more speed and better control. The board is around 40 inches long, about 22 inches wide and 2 inches thick.

It’s made from dow polyethylene foam (PE) and polypropylene foam (PP) but other more advanced materials are also used. Inside are single, double or triple stringers which give the board more strength. For more details about each board, read on!

Alternative Uses

While body boarding is done in the ocean, using body boards, AKA boogie boards, in the pool is also great. You can come up with some great games to use them, such as pool body board basketball (check this post for some great pool basketball hoops)

Pairing boogie boards with other pool toys makes for fun, exciting games as well. Some of them include throwing darts onto the boogie board, and monkey in the middle.

If you're in a sticky situation they can even be used in place of a life jacket. While it's not ideal to use boogie boards for water safety, they are better than nothing. Find some life jacket reviews here.

Buying Guide

Ask for good bodyboard brands and read bodyboard reviews in order to find out about what qualities should best boogie boards have.

  • Bodyboard size

Size is the most important element to consider when choosing the best beginner body board or buying a new one. Both height and weight will make a difference to your performance. When held out in front of you, your ideal bodyboard should reach from your knees up to your chin. Heavier riders are advised to choose a board with increased width for extra flotation. When placed on the floor in front of you, the board should be at the height of your belly button.

  • Cores

The core defines a board and will allow you to make progress, enjoy the sport and reach your full potential. The type of foam used in the core determines the bodyboard’s performance in the water. There are two types: polyethylene known as PE or Dow and polypropylene known as PP or beaded PP.

PE is the most common core used. It’s significantly heavier than PP but it has far more flex, which means more control. It’s perfect for cooler waters.

PP Cores are better for warm waters. They’re lighter and stronger than PE and enable a faster ride and extra speed.

  • Tail shapes

The two most common tail shapes are crescent and bat tails. For more edge and control you should choose a crescent tail while for more surface area and drive go for a bat tail.

  • Decks

The deck is the material on a bodyboard that you lie on. The usual deck material is 8lb (density per inch) PE. It’s soft and flexible just like PE Cores but loses memory over time. However, some riders prefer their boards a little warn in, with elbow divots and mellow deck creases.

  • Skins

The skin is the underneath material of a bodyboard. There are two types of material commonly used for skins: Surlyn and HDPE (high-density polyethylene).

Surlyn the same plastic used to cover golf balls. It makes top rated bodyboards responsive and recover to their original shape when flexed. It also makes the bodyboard faster and not the best beginner body board. Due to its elasticity it’s the more expensive of the two skin materials but it’s the preferred one.

The cheaper alternative is a HDPE on an entry-level or best bodyboard for beginners. The HDPE skin is less performance-based to give great value for money while you increase your skill level.

  • Stringers

Stringers are tubes or rods made from carbon fibre or fibre glass that run through the Core. They make boards last a lot longer they also increase performance and give flex. In cooler waters, a single central stringer is the norm. However, two and even three stringer systems are used for a more durable board with longer lasting recoil properties.

  • Rails

Rails are the side edges of your bodyboard. There are two different rail designs featured in most bodyboards: the 60/40 and 50/50. These numbers relate to how much of the chine is at the top and how much of the rail is at the bottom.

A 60/40 rail means more control on bigger, more powerful waves and is traditionally the most common option. 50/50 rails offer more maneuverability and speed.

Thurso is an excellent board with the design which adds to ease of riding but with stability as its primary focus. It should last you a good while and provide the speed and the fun in water. It offers a great fun way to work out and is made of superior materials.

The deck of the Thurso Surf bodyboard is made from high-density cross-linked polyethylene foam (IPXE). As usually only found in high-end boards, the deck is heat laminated and sealed so it doesn’t delaminate that easy and that soon.

California Board Company Magnum Bodyboard features an EPS extruded polystyrene core and a CNC contoured XPE (Cross Linked Polyethylene) deck. HDPE high density polyethylene slick bottom skin has channels using a pro style template with arm wells.

Thumb bulbs will give you extra control, comfort and balance and the crescent bodyboard tail will provide even more control over your board. CBC Dual Swivel coil leash with nylon wrist strap is also included.

Magnum Bodyboard is the best bodyboard for medium weight and heavier riders who are 5′-10′ tall and up and 185 lbs or more. As for the ease of use and performance, it’s great for beginning, intermediate and advanced bodyboarders.

At this price point, it delivers the expected amount of performance, style and quality that you would typically find in boards at a slightly higher price in our bodyboards reviews.

Magnum Bodyboard is 44"x23"x2.75". It will probably be too big for most kids since they won’t weigh enough and the board will just float over the top of the waves and they won’t get anywhere. It will also be hard for them to hold on to so for younger and smaller riders this board will perform well.

California Board Company Magnum Bodyboard

As for the durability, this board will last as long as you handle it well: anyone complaining of any bubbles or delamination of the top cover has most probably left their board in the hot summer sun for longer periods of time. When you’re out of the water, put your board in the shade and you’ll have no problems with it.

Things We Liked

  • The performance, style and quality on a par with more expensive boards
  • CBC Dual Swivel coil leash and nylon wrist strap included.
  • Ideal for bigger riders
  • Molded contoured deck for more comfort

Things We Didn't Like

  • Might be too big if you don’t check the suitable size for you
