Top 6 Best Pool Alarm Reviews 2019 | Inground, Floating, Underwater, and Motion Recommendations

Enjoying the summer in your swimming pool is fun for the whole family, but it can suddenly become dangerous if proper pool safety standards aren’t met. We strongly advise buying a pool safety alarm.

According to Merle I. Stoner of ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) “Approximately 350 to 400 children under 5 years of age drown in pools each year in the United States and another 3,000 are treated in hospital emergency rooms for near-drowning incidents; most of the cases involve residential pools.”

In order to keep your family, yourself and others including your pets safe, there are a number of pool fences (insert internal hyperlink when fences article goes live on UPG), pool alarms, and the best pool covers you can buy to keep your pool safe when adults aren’t around to supervise.

Buying guide

When adults are not there to keep a watchful eye on the pool, the best pool alarm which meets your needs will be a trusted ally. However reliable, well made and durable, do not trust solely on even the best pool alarms as nothing can replace adult supervision.

In our swim alert pool alarm review, we strongly state that the best pool alarms must have the following features:

  • Easy installation
  • Tamper proof
  • Includes a remote receiver with a range of up to 200 ft or more
  • Low battery indicator on both the alarm and on the receiver
  • Able to detect an object as small as a one year old child (minimum detecting weight about 18 pounds)
  • A loud and distinct alarm should sound in the matter of seconds when a child or a test object gets in the pool

Alarms will help your line of defense, so by all means get a pool alarm system which suits your needs. Other lines of defense include having a life jacket around to prevent drowning. There are a lot of different types of pool alarms on the market, so let’s consider some of the options.

Fence Mounted Pool Alarms

These swimming pool alarms are designed to run atop the wall or a pool safety fence (you can find the best safety pool fences here). They either use infrared rays to detect movement or magnetic connections which set off the alarm when the magnets are apart. These will loudly let you know if someone is around your pool.

These fence-mounted pool alarms are a cheaper alternative to the pool mounted devices. You’ll have more time to respond to the alarm since these alerts will sound as soon as someone gets into the pool area. If you have lively children or sneaky next door kids, they might be able to sneak by this type of alarm by jumping the fence.

Underwater Motion Alarms

An underwater pool sensor alarm uses a sonar grid beneath the surface of the water to detect a breach and sound a warning alarm. Since they use sonar detection instead of motion, these devices won’t scare you with false alarms because of wind making the pool water move.

However, they are sensitive enough to detect even the smallest body of about 15 pounds. These alarms are completely automated and re-arm themselves automatically. They provide a great primary security system for any size or shape of pool.

These are always activated in the pool, so there is no way for a child to sneak or fall into the water without the alarm sounding. Underwater motion pool alarms are always on. You’ll need to physically take it out of the pool and switch it to sleep mode before jumping in the pool or the alarm will sound.

Wearable Detectors

Wearable detectors are good solutions that work together with a base alarm unit. Each child wears a wristband that sounds an immediate alarm to one or more base stations when the wristband gets wet. They are nicely design and in different colors. Apart from your kids, you can add them to pet collars too to keep your pets safe.

The only real drawback with personal wearable detectors is that they need to be removed if the child wants to swim. Also, no alarm will sound the child not wearing a wristband and falls into the pool. A good additional safety option, these types of devices should not be considered as adequate for a primary detection system.

Floating Motion Sensors

These surface-based motion alarms are popular among pool owners because they tend to be relatively inexpensive and work well when a still surface of the pool water is disturbed. They use electronic signals to measure moving water and waves created by objects of a certain weight.

These types of alarms are good secondary systems and can be used in above-ground and in-ground pools. While reasonably effective, surface alarms can sound an alert when disturbed by strong winds, so you can get a false alarm.

New Safety Turtle 2.0 Child Immersion Pool Alarm Kit is the latest version of the original Safety Turtle which has been keeping the kids safe 1999. The new version is not compatible with the old base and has notable improvements as listed in our Safety Turtle pool alarm reviews.

When the Turtle wristband is submerged in water, it emits a loud alarm at the base station, alerting parents or caregivers that a child or a pet is at risk of drowning. It’s simple to use and kids have fun wearing their “turtle watch.”

There are two parts to the Safety Turtle. First is the alarm base station. It comes with a power adapter that plugs into a wall outlet. The other part is a wristband which fastens securely to a child’s wrist using the special locking key.

If the wrist band pool water alarm becomes wet for any reason, the base station emits a loud alarm, warning of a potential emergency. The alarm continues to sound until the base is reset. It might get wet in the house or the yard as well, but most parents would rather put up with occasional annoyance with false alarms rather than risk their children’s safety.

New Safety Turtle 2.0 Child Immersion Pool/Water Alarm Kit

The wrist band is adjustable for all sizes and comes with a key to remove the band so that children aren’t able to take it off by themselves. Multiple bands can be added to the base station, convenient for any size family and little pool guests. The turtle itself is 1.5 x 1.5 inches and the band opening for the turtle is 5/8 inch.

So, what’s new about version 2.0? The smaller streamlined base station, greater transmission range (800 feet compared to 150 feet for the original model) and state-of-the-art water switch technology to reduce false alarms.

There’s also a low-battery indicator so you know when it’s time to replace them. The USB cord enables computer to power the base station and Safety Turtle 2.0 is easier to use as there’s no required color-coding of base stations, Turtles and accessories.

Hi, Laurie

I have an in-ground pool, so I chose the Poolguard PGRM-2 In-Ground Pool Alarm to detect any motion in my pool. Plus, I also bought a pool door alarm to make me know anyone has enter my pool area without my permission. I think a pool alarm and a pool door alarm will be a double insurance.
