In our commitment to helping you find the best pool cover pump, we have rounded up several pool cover pumps . We also went ahead to find what each one was good at and poor at based on ease of use, performance, and affordability.

There are two different kinds of pumps used on pool covers. They are the manual and the automatic pumps. Both pumps use electricity and attach a garden hose to the drain.

Where they differ is in their operation. A manual pump requires you to go outside to pump it whenever you need to use it. An automatic pump, on the other hand, works automatically, when the water increases to a certain level. It also shuts down when the water being drained reduces to a certain level.

Best Pool Cover Pump Buying Guide

To take advantage of these pool cover pump reviews you'll want to know what exactly to look for. There are pros and cons to each product, and sometimes your needs may differ from us! Understanding what you need and what to look for in a pool cover pump will ensure you get the best pool cover pump for your needs.

1. Brand

In this industry, there are only a handful of brands worth buying from and they are Wayne, Little Giant and Superior.

Wayne makes mostly high-end models but they are quite functional and easy to use. Little Giant, has been in the game for years and they have perfected the art of making efficient pumps at a fraction of the price of the premium models. Superior manufactures functional pumps at budget-friendly prices.

2. How much water can it pump?

Pool cover pumps are usually rated by the amount of gallons they can pump per hour or maximum flow rate. The average you should aim for is 1500 gallons per hour (GPH) which is the only way you can properly remove water from the cover with speed

3. Automatic or Manual Pump

Manual pumps require manual labor. You will have to walk outside and use a hand pump to begin the suction process which will remove the water from the water.

This could pose a big challenge during winter. Automatic pool cover pumps, on the other hand, can detect when there is water to be pumped out or when it needs to turn on or off based on a set amount of time spent doing each activity.

4. Warranty

Every electronic device can fail at any time; this is why it is usually safe for the buyer to pick an item that has a decent warranty. Wayne pumps are usually more expensive but they also come with the longest warranty for 3 years which is a plus for a product that will withstand all kinds of weather conditions.

When it comes to pool cover pumps, versatility is key as it is normal to have areas of your home being flooded for reasons ranging from leaving the bathtub water running to having a blockage in the kitchen sink.

Superior Pump 91330 is a dual use pump which is strong enough to keep the pool cover dry as well as drain out an entire pool. It is made in the USA, sturdy and can tackle any issue that surrounds it.

This machine is well constructed and built for abuse. You can keep it out in the elements for days knowing fully well that it won't break up or stop working.

Most new pool owners think the problem with owning a pool is half solved once you can cover but there is another problem rearing its ugly head once the initial problem is solved.

That is the problem of keeping the pool cover free of debris and stagnant water. The thing with standing water is that soon it will become a bathing pool for ducks and birds and these animals won't stop at having a bath, they will drop their poop in it.

This is where the RULE A53S 1800 Pool Cover Pump comes in. This pool allows you to set it up and forget about the removal of water. Once you place this pump on the cover and plug it in, you're done until you have to remove the cover to open the pool.

This pool cover pump has a lot of kick to it and it is powerful enough to remove standing water before it piles up on your cover. There is a common pain point among users who have bought substandard pumps and had to replace them every year, with this pool cover pump, you won't have to worry about keeping the water off the cover as this durable RULE A53S1800 pump does that so well.

This pool cover pump is a mid-range pump that works at the rate of 1,800 Gallons per hour which is enough to tackle anything that nature throws at you - melting snow or a rain storm. Little Giant 5-APCP Automatic Pool Cover Pump is manufactured by one of the most recognizable brands in America.

The Little Giant 5-APCP Pool Cover Pump is a 1/6HP pump capable of removing water from pool covers and other flooded areas of about 1200 gallons per hour which are higher than what we have in some mid-range pumps such as the Rule A53S 1800 (which has been reviewed above).

It can remove standing water from melting snow and ice as well as rain water. This unit from Little Giant is built with a handy on/off feature that automatically activates the pump action when it is about 2.3 inches of water depth and it turns it off when it has been removed to about 1.2" to 1.5" of water. This feature is missing in a lot of automatic pool cover pumps and in all manual pumps which require you to go out every time to manually start the pump.

There is a stabilizing plate that comes with this unit. It is detachable and what it does is to stop the heavy winds from lifting the cover on an above ground pool which could result in your pump tipping over and not being able to pump the standing water as it should. This extra feature makes

The Swim Time Dredger Jr. Above Ground Pool Winter Cover Pump is an automatic pool cover pump that is small in size and lightweight, coming in at 4 pounds.
If you own an above the ground swimming pool and you need a pump that you can use to remove rain water and melting ice, this is the best option for you.

This manual pump drains water at a rate of 350 gallons an hour which would very much get the job done for a mid-sized pool.

It is fully submersible, comes with a garden hose adapter, 25 ft. power cord to connect to the power socket, reusable inlet filter for blocking the entry of leaves, debris, and dirt from going into the pump which could clog its operation.

The Dredger Jr. has an automatic on/off feature which works based on water level. It will remove water within 1/8 inches of the pool cover. While this could be satisfactory for a lot of people, we noticed that some buyers complained about this pump leaving a puddle after it had shut off.

It is also worthy to note that while you can use this pool cover pump during winter, it is not wise to leave it out in the snow with water inside of it. It could damage the equipment.

Things We Liked

  • Automatically shuts off when water is gone
  • Has garden hose adapter and 25 foot power cord

Why You Might Not Need One

Some people might feel that pool cover pumps are for everyone but that’s not so. Not everyone needs a pool cover pump and here are the reasons why buying a pump is not for everyone.

1. You don’t close your pool

If you rarely close your pool during the winter months, there is no reason to buy a pool cover pump that will remove standing water or melting the ice away from your cover. It is a no brainer.

2. Limited pool budget

Building an above the ground pool cost a lot, then you also have to buy chemicals and then have to think about buying a pool cover.

Once you get the pool cover, you notice the water it retains during the rainy season or in winter from the melting storm. The chemicals will keep the water safe and sanitary for usage while the cover will protect it during winter.

Buying a cover pump might be an extra expense which you might not be able to afford. If you do have a limited pool budget, you are better off not buying a pool cover pump or you can go for a manual pump, which cost way less than their automatic counterparts.
