Pool Heat Pump Buying Guide
1. Are Pool Heat Pumps the right choice?
Pool heat pumps are great for heating up swimming pools, but they are not for everybody as they only work well for certain environments. If the environment lacks certain conditions then they can be very ineffective.
To begin with, they require a lot of electricity for the heat exchanger and the whole heat pump to perform well - and require heavy draw electrical service similar to hot tubs.
They also don't work well in all climates and conditions - working better in warm areas with a lot of sunlight. To work, the air around them must be at least 45 degrees Fahrenheit or they won't be able to heat your pool. This is because they draw on outside air and convert it to heat.
The higher the surrounding air is, the warmer it can make your water for optimal pool heating. If you are planning to get one make sure you have it in an free flowing area with plenty of ventilation or this could render it ineffective since it relies on drawing heat from the air.
Finaly, many people get confused about pool heaters vs heat pool heat pumps. They are not the same.
In addition to the pool heating conditions we mentioned earlier, pumps are only available to inground pools while pool heaters can be effectively used for both inground and above ground pools. Also, pool heaters can work in all environments while heat pumps require warmer conditions so that your pool surface area doesn't lose heat during the swimming season.
If you can't meet the above recommended conditions or have an above ground pool, we encourage you to also read our list of the best pool heaters.
2. Energy Efficiency
With residential pool heat pumps you are paying for the energy you use and heating up an entire pool is no easy feat. Because of this you'll want a pump that is efficient in terms of energy which can end up saving hundreds of dollars on pool heating in the long run.
Make sure to look out for a heat pump that not only does its job, but also saves energy and is environmentally friendly. If energy efficiency is important to you then also consider getting a solar pool cover.
3. Right for your Pool
The larger a pool is the more powerful a swimming pool heat pump must be. It can be okay to attach a larger pump to a smaller pool, but not vise versa.
Not doing the proper research and getting a swimming pool heat pump that is too small for your pool will result in wasted money since it won't be able to heat up the pool. Make sure to do proper calculations with your heat pump and pool size so that you know it will work well to meet your pool heating needs.
Here's an example schematic of a standard plumbing layout with a single heat pump unit:
Get to know the pool heat pump and heaters parts and what they do
The water intake that sucks the water into the heater. The control panel which is connected to the thermostat lets you to monitor and adjust the temperature.
The control module passes on data between the thermostat and other parts of your heater to make sure they all work smoothly.
Based on the type of your pool heater, there is either a gas input and gas valves or an electric cable which provide your heater with different power source - gas or electricity.
The burners and heat exchangers, you guessed it, are in charge of the heat.
All these parts need to be of highest quality as well as reliable to keep the maintenance costs as low as possible. This is why we recommend going for a well-established brand as they use great quality materials and engineer their pool heat pumps and heaters according to highest standards.
4. Concluding the Buying Guide
These aren't the only things to look out for, but they are the most important. Performing proper due diligence will result in you picking the best pool heat pump for your pool so that you can enjoy nice, warm water while swimming.
Failure to do adequate research can result in a lot of wasted money and no benefits. Make sure to take the time to do your research, although it is hard to go wrong with our top 3 picks.

The Hayward HeatPro Titanium is one the best inground pool heat pumps out there, with 140,000 BTUs. Hayward is one of the most credible and experienced sellers of pool heaters, so from the brand name alone you already have a winner in your hands. Its unique selling point is its titanium heat exchanger titanium heat exchanger, as well as the ability of its parts to resist deterioration.
Hayward has designed this pool heater to be durable, and that goes from the heat exchanger to housing.
For instance, the body panels are resistant to UV rays, rust, and deterioration.
You also get the ultra-gold corrosion resistant evaporator fin as well as the polyethylene screen that protects the evaporator coil from damage.
The problem with other pool heaters is that they make a lot of noise, but you wouldn’t encounter that with this one. Thanks to its acoustic compressor cover as well as the profiled fan blade, you get to heat your pool but at the same time enjoy a quiet operation.
Efficiency is very important for pool heaters, because the last thing you want is to be wasting heat energy. With this one, you get a titanium heat exchanger that’s specifically designed to maximize the heat transfer. Your pool gets the full extent of the heat generated.
Installing your pool heater is one thing, but making sure it works properly and stays that way is a different story. The great thing about this pool heater is that it gives uncompromising performance even when the weather conditions are at their harshest. This means you can rely on it anytime.
At 287 pounds (and a shipping weight of 300 pounds), this is much heavier than Hayward’s HP21104T and HP21254T. While this added weight also translates to higher BTU Heating Performance, some may see this weight as an issue.
This is an electric pool heater so if you’re not mindful, your electric bill can go up, especially if you insist on using it during winter. Electricity is critical for this to run so power outages can be a problem as well.
Bottom Line: The Hayward Heatpro is a solid pool heater for anyone and arguably the best pool heat pump. It works well in all types of conditions and will do its job efficiently. A top choice for anyone seeking a pool heater.
MOST DURABLE, MOST POPULAR

The Pentair UltraTemp Pool Heat Pump 460930 comes from one of the most well known brands in pool supplies. It is well designed - with quality craftsmanship evident in every piece and weld and is worthy of consideration for anybody seeking a pump.
If it's your first heater and/or you're not very good with technology then this is a great choice.
Its easy to use control board panel makes selecting what you want it to do very easy. It has an awesome auto set feature to keep the water at a certain temperature consistently so that you don't have to keep adjusting it.
However, that's not the only automatic feature Pentair UltraTemp has. It continuously runs self diagnostics so that it can monitor its performance and ensure it's operating at 100% - not only to keep your pool warm, but also to keep your energy bill down.
Finally, we've mentioned this a few times. Pentair UltraTemp is built to last with quality craftsmanship. For example, the titanium heat exchanger is corrosion free so that it can run for a long time.
There isn't a lot to hate about this pool pump, but it has a lackluster warranty that you'll want to be sure to read before installation. It's tricky and has a ton of conditions. For example, if you attempt to install it yourself the warranty is null! Do a careful read.
Another "con" is that this pool pump, Pentair UltraTemp, doesn't cool water. This isn't a real big con given the fact that it is a heat pump, but there are some people who ask if it only heats water. We're just putting this here just in case.
Bottom Line: The Pentair Ultratemp is the best residential pool heat pump that won't disappoint. It's great for pools of all sizes and its high quality build will surely please the buyer.
BEST VALUE FOR MONEY

The Fibroheat Swimming Electric Heat Pump is a solid heater that anyone with a smaller pool should consider. Although it is from a smaller company than many other pool products, you get a chance to talk to the owner himself for service and support. They are very knowledgable and provide great service to help you with your pump.
You get a residential pool heat pump for 1 reason - to heat your pool and extend swimming season. The Fibroheat definitely does a great job at this. Many people see significant increase in temperature - 5 to 8 degree increases are quite common, but it does matter where you live as well.
Another thing that makes it awesome is that it is very energy efficient. With pool heat pumps you definitely want electricity over natural gas since it is cheaper: natural gas heaters will cost you a lot more in the the long run, and you'll see that this won't have too large of an impact on your electricity bill.
Finally, it's clearly made with quality and durability. The parts and welding are of amazing quality - the craftsmanship is clear. Even the electronics are labeled! There is even a cable to extend the hardware away from the pump and under shelter.
It runs quietly and smoothly as it hums along. Sometimes you might even have to double check it to see if it is actually running.
This swimming pool heat pump is ideal for smaller pools. It may work for medium sized ones, but it may not increase the pool temperature as much as you would want. This makes sense given it is only 55K BTU.
Most people didn't have issues with shipping, but there were a couple that said it arrived with a few cosmetic dents - probably because there was no styrofoam to cover it in the wooden box it came in. However, the people who did see the dents said it had no impact on performance so you can breathe easy knowing it still works well.
Bottom line: It's solid and does it job well. If you want great customer support then this is a great choice for you since this small company provides a lot of help to its customers. These two facts make it one of the best pool heat pumps on the market.

Another offering from Hayward - the HP50TA Heat Pump that’s ideal for a smaller pool and spa would be this 50,000 BTU heat pump. Measuring 31 x 40 x 35 inches and weighing 190 pounds, this is one of the most popular and well-reviewed heat pumps you can find.
Hayward HP50TA has an acoustic compressor cover and profiled fan blade that makes sure it runs quietly and efficiently, but it also has an ultra-gold corrosion-resistant evaporator for durability.
Some heaters can warm up pool water really well but make so much noise in the process. This 50,000 BTU residential heat pump from Hayward was engineered for quiet pool heating operations, so you won’t encounter this problem.
Rust is a common problem for electric pool heaters, but not with Hayward HP50TA. With durable injection-molded UV-resistant body panels, you can be sure that it won’t be affected by rust and deterioration. The hardware is made of stainless steel, and you also get a polyethylene screen that keeps the evaporator coil from getting damaged.
With its simple, compact, and lightweight design, the Hayward HeatPro heat pumps are really easy to install or service. This works when you’re installing Hayward HP50TA in a new pool and spa, but it also works if you simply want to upgrade an existing system and have a longer swimming season.
Put this in the harshest conditions and you still get an uncompromised and high quality performance for smaller residential in-ground and above ground pools. This is largely because of the titanium heat exchanger
counter-flow, but also because every single part of this pool heater is heavy duty and reliable. Having in mind the overal power of Hayward electric pool heaters, this 50.000 BTU model is not suitable for really large pools.
Bottom Line: If you have a smaller pool this Hayward Residential Pool Heater is probably your best pool pump for small pool. It has a number of things that make it attractive and will work well for any small pool (making it also a great heater for an above ground pool and spa).

Fully tested and certified by ARI, the HeatWave SuperQuiet Heat Pumps have gone through a rigorous and comprehensive process that ensures you only get the quality you deserve. This heater has the best manufacturer’s warranty in its class, so you are given peace of mind knowing that the manufacturer can really vouch for the product and help you out in the rare case that something goes wrong.
With this heat pump, you get a Titanium ThermoLink heat exchanger that makes it run super efficiently. This is because of the patented counter-flow water management, which ensures that the pool water is heated but also that very minimal energy is wasted in the process.
Another special function that you get is a keypad lockout, which ensures that the settings are tamper-proof. Once you figure out the heat and temperature settings for you, you can leave it and rest assured that it’s tamper-proof.
With its off-set plumbing, it’s quite easy to install this one. One of the most common problems that people have with pool heaters is the difficulty of installation and even the actual operation. This pool heater is one of the most user-friendly out there, so this is definitely an advantage.
True to its name, this pool heater is super quiet so you don’t need to worry about waking up the entire neighborhood. With its heavy duty scroll compressor, you basically get a pool heater that has been specifically engineered for an extremely quiet operation.
At 302 pounds and measuring 46.8 x 39.5 x 36.5 inches, this is not the pool heater you get if you’re looking for a small, lightweight heater. This means that carriers may not be able to bring this product straight to your doorstep, and you need to arrange for something else in terms of delivery. You need to be mindful of this weight so that you can prepare for the handling before and once it gets to you.
Currently, this item is not eligible for shipping to international locations. This can only be shipped within the United States and to APO/FPO addresses, but you also have to check with the manufacturer to clarify warranty and support issues.
Bottom Line: The AquaCal SuperQuiet Heatwave does its job, but there are clearly better options. There is no real reason to pick this heater over some of the other ones we have reviewed.
