Soaker Hose

What is a soaker hose?

A soaker hose is a hose which is punctured with small holes throughout the whole hose length. The holes allow water to drip straight into the soil near your plants, exactly where needed. If you want your plants to grow well you’ll want to pay attention to these tips to find the best soaker hose.

As a form of drip irrigation, using a soaker hose means delivering water straight to the plant roots as the hose is positioned on the ground near the base of your plants. These porous and perforated hoses use much less water while delivering it more efficiently than sprinklers or regular hoses.

Sprinkles disperse water everywhere: on the plants’ leaves, around plants, onto the surrounding ground without plants or even on your paths. Even the best garden hoses can put too much pressure where your plants don’t want it and you have to keep standing there while watering.

Buying guide

So, how to choose the best soaker hose on the market? Let’s consider the most important features.

  • The length and number of holes – Make sure that the hose is long enough to cover everything that has to be watered in your garden. A garden hose soaker efficiency relies on a huge number of holes for gentle but constant dripping. Soaker hoses come round or flat in shape and in different lengths: 25 feet, 50 feet, 75 feet and 100 feet.

Soaker Hose

Soaker hoses have one open end to attach to the garden hose and a cap at the other end. You can extend the length of the hose by unscrewing the end cap and attaching another soaker hose to it.

From your faucet to your vegetable and flower beds, use a reliable regular garden hose and use a soaker hose only where the plants are. The total hose length should not exceed 100 feet in order to get normal water pressure.

  • Durability and strength – Soaker are generally made of recycled rubber (mostly tire) and these are the most durable and can stand the water, mud, soil particles and bad weather. The best soaker hoses are strong enough and yet flexible for curving around where needed.
  • Pressure rating – The best soaker hoses can withstand higher water pressure but the optimal working pressure is around 10 psi. Some soaker hoses can burst and flood the soil when exposed to high water pressure. Look for potential issues in soaker hose reviews.

Soaker Hose

Since most home systems are around 50psi, we strongly advise attaching a pressure reducer nozzle to your faucet. It’s cheap and you’ll be able to control the pressure. Soaker hoses should drip water, not sprinkle.

Let’s move on to our soaker hose reviews and see which soaker hoses stand out as regards quality and functionality!
