If you’re in the market for a spa, you may have never considered a salt water hot tub. This type of spa works wonders for your skin and has many perks that may surprise you. We all know what saltwater has a lot of health benefits, so don’t knock it until you try it.

It’s easy to go with the simple solution and buy the traditional chlorinated spa but don’t be so quick to count out the saltwater hot tub. If you’re in search of that warm fuzzy feeling this year, consider dipping your toes in this.

What’s the Deal with a Salt Water Hot Tub?

Right off the bat, you’re probably thinking, “Boy, oh boy, now I need to look at a completely different list of hot tubs if I want a saltwater one.”

Thankfully, you’re wrong.

You can turn any hot tub into a saltwater hot tub with the right equipment. If you already have a spa, you’re even closer to reaping some of the benefits.

The only difference between a chlorine hot tub and a saltwater hot tub is the inclusion of a salt-chlorine generator. Instead of using the traditional chlorine tablets that circulate the chemical through your spa, you’ll use the generator.

One great feature of saltwater generators is they come with different power levels so you can control how much salt-chlorine you pump into the tub.

Most high-quality generators will also alert you if the salt levels are too high or too low, so you can adjust them accordingly. The box mounts directly onto the side of your spa, and you insert the wand into the tub.

Benefits of saltwater hot tubs

If you’ve ever heard of some of the benefits of Epsom salt water using a saltwater hot tub has a lot of the same effects. It’s a healthier way to get your tub on while you soothe any aching joints or muscles.

Here are some of the most significant benefits of a saltwater hot tub.

Water softness

The salt system will produce a small amount of chlorine naturally, but the salt is what keeps the water quality soft, so you don’t have to check the levels continually. The natural chlorine reduces the negative impacts that traditional chemical chlorine has on your skin.

Salt also causes the water to become more buoyant, allowing you to sit comfortably in your tub and enjoy a more relaxing experience.

Gentler water

Going along with softness, you also don’t have some of the sensitivity effects of chlorine. You won’t have to worry about getting the chemicals in your eyes, and if you have children, they won’t become so irritated from the chlorine because it’s produced naturally.

No odor

Have you ever walked into a hotel and you know immediately that they have a pool nearby? That smell is what we’re talking about. You finally don’t have to deal with the strong chlorine smell that gets stuck in your hair.

Now you have an odorless saltwater hot tub, and you can breathe in the saline, which is also great for your sinuses.

Less maintenance

Throw away your chemicals, your tablets, and your bromine because they are no longer necessary. The saltwater is what sanitizes your spa now.

When you add the right amount of salt to your tub, it reduces the amount of chemical fluctuations in the water, which results in less checking and less dumping of dangerous chemicals.

Most of the saltwater systems come with testing strips so you can test the tub once per week and if everything is fine, you’re good to go.

Disadvantages of saltwater hot tubs

While a saltwater hot tub might initially seem like a no-brainer, it’s not all perfect. Here are some of the primary downsides to purchasing a saltwater spa.

Corrosion causes added maintenance

As we all know, salt is corrosive. When it spends an extensive amount of time on or inside anything, it will erode the material over months and even years.

Salt is corrosive to your spa and all its components, so you have to pay close attention to things like heaters and liners. It is recommended that you drain the water a few times per year and clean the entire spa.

Higher cost

There are specific saltwater hot tubs that you can buy, which are more expensive than traditional ones. If you are looking to add a saltwater system to your current spa, there is also an added cost associated with that.

Strict water temperature guidelines

With a chlorinated spa, there are little rules to follow in terms of the temperature. The chlorine will pump through, no matter what. With saltwater, you need to keep the water at 60 degrees or higher to keep the system flowing.

Many salt-chlorine pumps will stop running when the temperature drops below that level. If you don’t have anything running and sterilizing the water, you are setting yourself up for bacterial growth.

You will also have unnecessary draining of the water. Many people also believe that salt water doesn’t sterilize the water as well as bromine.

Caring for Your Salt Water Hot Tub

One of the main perks of a saltwater hot tub is the low maintenance required. With chlorine, you’ll have to drain the tub at least four times per year, and you will need to add chlorine weekly.

With saltwater hot tubs you’ll only need to replace the salt cartridge three times per year and drain the hot tub twice for cleaning. The cartridges are also easy to replace. They are designed to provide the right amount of salt to the water.

That way, you don’t have to spend hours playing around with chemicals until you get it right.

The Choice Is Yours

By now, you should understand all the benefits and downsides of buying a saltwater hot tub. Personally, I love the idea of using healthier methods of relaxation in my life. All the chemicals that go into traditional hot tubs are not good for your body or your skin.

If you’re looking for a healthier and less maintenance-intensive solution to your hot soaking desires, look into a saltwater spa.
